Diese Vorgänge anhand aller verfügbaren kulturhistorischen Zeugnisse so prägnant wie möglich herauszustellen, ist die zentrale Absicht dieses Buches. In fast allen politischen Debatten über die Zeit zwischen 1933 und 1945 hat der Begriff Kultur eine zentrale Rolle gespielt. Während es dabei in der Inneren Emigration und im Exil fast ausschließlich um hochkulturelle Vorstellungen ging, sind die Nationalsozialisten auf diesem Sektor stets von strategischen Gesichtspunkten ausgegangen. Sie boten jeder Bevölkerungsschicht - trotz aller vorgeblichen Volksgemeinschaftskonzepte - das ihnen Gemäße: der Bildungsbourgeoisie die Werke der klassischen Tradition und den sogenannten breiten Massen eine sie von den verbrecherischen Fernzielen der NSDAP ablenkende Unterhaltungskultur, deren wichtigstes Ziel es war, sie bei guter Laune zu halten. Jost Hermand zeigt in seinem neuen Buch, dass dieses Kalkül maßgeblich zu jener Erfolgsgeschichte des Nazifaschismus beigetragen hat, die für die Nachgeborenen bis heute ein bestürzendes Phänomen ist. Ihre Gegner in der Inneren Emigration und im Exil - ohne Zugang zu den auf Breitenwirkung zielenden Massenmedien und daher im Bereich der randständigen höheren Künste bleibend - blieben dagegen relativ wirkungslos und konnten erst im Zuge der sogenannten Vergangenheitsbewältigung nach dem Dritten Reich die nötige Anerkennung finden und damit eine Wirkung entfalten.
